Whakatane High School students love attending Tournament Week each year as it is the pinnacle of the sports season and they get to compete against the best students from around the country. It is important to our school that we provide opportunities for our students to represent the school and their region at North Island and National Sporting events. This funding from NZCT means that we will be able to reduce the cost barrier for many of our students.
The reason for the application was to support students attending sports events at various locations around the North Island. With the increased accommodation and transport costs over the last few years, this grant is vital in ensuring that attendance at these tournaments is more affordable to our students through reducing one of the biggest barriers to participation, cost. The sports that will be helped by this grant are hockey, netball, basketball, football, adventure racing, and rugby, with just over one hundred students representing the school across these codes.
Whakatane High School has a history not only of competing at a high level, but also achieving strong results. Our students all come from different backgrounds and are very proud to represent the school, the community, and their families. Attending these events provides them with an opportunity to travel outside of their region, play against new opposition, and foster a lifelong enjoyment of sport. They look forward to travelling each year to take on some of the best teams from around the country.
