New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) has granted $6,400 to North Shore Centre of Mutual Aid (CMA) in Takapuna, Auckland, to help improve the strength and balance of older adults on the North Shore and reduce their social isolation.
Through a partnership with Harbour Sport, CMA offers ACC-accredited strength and balance classes, aimed at falls prevention and helping older adults maintain their independence. Kiri Beven, CMA’s Funding and Marketing Manager, says "These classes are vital in reducing the risk of falls, which are a leading cause of injury and loss of independence for older adults. Our focus is on improving muscle strength, balance, and coordination," says Beven.
The classes also provide social benefits, boosting confidence and helping members build connections with others. "For family members and caregivers, knowing their loved ones are engaged in a safe and supportive environment provides much-needed respite and peace of mind," Beven adds.
"Our mission is to combat loneliness and isolation among older adults, an often forgotten demographic. Small community organisations like ours play an essential role in providing consistent support to individuals who have limited social interactions. For many of our members, especially those with physical or transport barriers, our services represent their only opportunity for social engagement and physical activity each week."
NZCT’s funding ensures the sustainability and growth of these services, which are offered across eight centres in the region. This support allows CMA to continue providing transportation, companionship, and activities that improve the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of its members.
"These centres are a lifeline for many seniors who would otherwise struggle to access essential services," says Beven. "By empowering us to continue our work, NZCT has helped build a stronger community where older adults feel valued and connected."
Shirley, a participant, shares, "CMA is a fabulous organisation, it gets you out of the house, and it offers company and friendship. If I didn’t have CMA, I’d be sitting alone at home watching TV. CMA means enjoyable, friendships, and very much needed."
Glenys, a volunteer in her seventies, says, "The strength and balance classes run by CMA are so much fun. We have fabulous music, a great laugh, and everyone gets involved. I wouldn’t be doing these at home, it’s so much more enjoyable with friends."
NZCT’s GM of Grants, Marketing and Communications, Ben Hodges, says “We’re proud that the funding from our responsible gaming partnerships with hospitality venues across the North Shore has enabled CMA to holistically improve the lives of older adults.”
