The kids at Feilding High School are excited to learn their school has received a grant of $8,950 from NZCT for new warm-up tops.
Head of Sport Darren Larsen says, “FAHS works with the goal of shaping good men and women through leadership, opportunity, mentoring, and challenge. We facilitate this by ensuring that our players have adequate opportunity to compete locally and nationally so they can test themselves and learn and grow as people and sportsmen and sports women.”
“We requested funding for the cost of warm up tops for ten teams that represent our school in both local and national competitions, including boys and girls basketball, canoe polo, football, hockey, rugby, and our top netball team.”
“One of our main philosophies is ‘Look Good, Feel Good, Play Good,’ a policy our late Head of Hostel, Rick Francis, implemented twenty years ago with the 1st XV. All of our teams have historically attained a high level of success and we take great pride in looking professional when we take the field.”
“We believe that sport is an integral part of school life and FAHS has a reputation for offering a wide variety of sporting opportunities for students with excellent facilities and high-quality coaching. This has resulted in students engaging in sport and competing at a high level both locally and nationally and developing fine leadership, teams-man-ship and self-motivational qualities.”
“Being outside of a main centre and being the only high school in the town, travel is essential. This makes participating in sport instantly more expensive than other teams that we play on a week-to-week basis because of the travel costs. We constantly look for ways to make participating in sport - and in many cases sports as a number of our student athletes play more than one sport - more attainable.“
“We applied for warm up tops for our five main winter codes because we wanted to make sure everyone who wanted to could participate. Being from a small-town, sponsorship is limited and, in the past, our 1st XV has had a monopoly on local businesses due to Rugby being the highest profile sport in NZ.”
“Sport continues to grow at FAHS and this is evident in the scale of our annual Sports Awards. Organisations like NZCT provide multiple opportunities for all students at our school and break down the biggest barrier for many others to participate, that being financial.”
