NZCT Helps Kickstart Junior Football at Tahuna FC!

Community sport is such an important part of what makes Nelson a great place to live and it’s fantastic to see junior football back at Tahuna FC. I’m looking forward to seeing these young players out on the pitch and I know the whole community will get behind them.

New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) has granted $12,725 to Tahuna FC, to fund new kits, footballs, training goals, and essential equipment for the return of junior football, giving local children the opportunity to play.

Club President Will Murphy says, “After more than a decade, Tahuna FC is thrilled to bring junior football back to the community. This generous NZCT grant was crucial in making it happen.”

The funding helps eliminate the financial barriers that often come with youth sports. By providing essential equipment, it allows children in the area to get involved without high upfront costs. It also encourages skill development, physical activity, and team building among the youth, while fostering stronger community connections.

“It's brilliant to have junior football back in Tahunanui. We signed our boy Jonty up as soon as it was announced. Can’t wait to see him playing in the same colours as mum and dad," says Will Mathews, parent and club member.

Abbi Robinson, another club member, adds, “As a parent, it means a lot to have a club that’s focused on making sport affordable and accessible. I'm looking forward to seeing my daughter playing for them this year.”

The revival of junior football will strengthen ties within the local community, with new teams creating more engagement between families, local businesses, and the club.

Tim Skinner, Nelson City Councillor says, “Community sport is such an important part of what makes Nelson a great place to live and it’s fantastic to see junior football back at Tahuna FC. I’m looking forward to seeing these young players out on the pitch and I know the whole community will get behind them."

NZCT’s GM of Grants, Marketing and Communications, Ben Hodges, adds, “We’re excited to help the children of Tahuna get involved in sport and to represent their suburb with pride. Our grant wouldn’t be possible without the responsible gaming partnership we share with Ocean Lodge.”
