NZCT Grant Boosts Taniwha Outrigger Canoe Club’s Youth Programmes.

We aim to provide a vehicle for positive change and development. Waka ama helps young people connect with their cultural heritage and become well-rounded community members.

New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) has granted $10,000 to the Taniwha Outrigger Canoe Club in Milford, on Auckland’s north shore for the purchase of a new OC6 Maolo waka to meet the growing demand for the club's youth programmes.

Since its inception in the 1990s, Taniwha Outrigger Canoe Club has been vital in the growth of waka ama in New Zealand. The race they established in 2007, the Takapuna Beach Cup, has become one of the most prestigious races in the Pacific. From an initial fleet of 19 waka in 2007, it quickly evolved into a truly international race with crews from all around the world and now attracts racing fleets in excess of one hundred waka.

Recent data highlights concerning trends in respect to the health and well-being of young people, particularly among Māori and Pacific youth. The club is looking to effect positive change with a pilot waka ama programme that focuses on holistic youth development. The club is now committed to channelling its resources towards supporting local tamariki and rangatahi.

Club Vice-President Michael Mann adds, “We aim to provide a vehicle for positive change and development. Waka ama helps young people connect with their cultural heritage and become well-rounded community members.”

NZCT Grants Manager Ben Hodges adds “Sport is a great way to engage with youth, provide life skills, and brighten futures. Waka ama’s strong cultural foundations adds an extra layer of benefits. NZCT is grateful for the responsible gaming fundraising partnerships we share with The Hub Milford that made our grant possible.”
