New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) has awarded $60,000 to the Rotorua Basketball Association (RBA) so they can continue fostering youth engagement, physical fitness, and community building in Rotorua.

Farida Soloman, RBA Board Member, says, “RBA has been a cornerstone of basketball development in the Rotorua region for many years. Our mission is to foster the sport by providing opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels to participate, compete, and thrive. The support from NZCT helps us maintain crucial roles, which are vital to our organisation’s sustainability and growth.”

Junette Putarnui, Vice Chairperson of RBA, adds, “Our teams inspire younger players, promote healthy lifestyles, and highlight the importance of teamwork. This grant will not only build local pride but also showcase Rotorua’s talent and commitment to youth development on a national stage so the impact of NZCT’s support extends far beyond the immediate Rotorua community.”

The association runs a range of programmes that cater to primary and intermediate school students, offering miniball and junior competitions to introduce young players to the sport. For teens and adults, they provide competitive environments through High School and Club Leagues. Additionally, RBA offers development programmes to nurture emerging talent and hosts tournaments and events that bring teams from across New Zealand together, fostering community pride and regional visibility.

NZCT’s GM of Grants, Marketing and Communications, Ben Hodges, adds, “Basketball’s popularity continues to soar. We’re proud that the funds raised through our responsible gaming partnerships with Kasper’s Sports Bar, Mo’s Bar and the West End Tavern are ensuring even more people have access to this awesome sport.”
