The NZCT has awarded a grant of $50,000 to Methven Community Swimming Pool to upgrade their operating systems.
Secretary Joanne Newport says -
Unfortunately, we were unable to open the pool for the 2022/2023 season as the filtration and pump system machinery became unusable. This meant our community had no local access to a swimming facility and nowhere to educate children on water safety. We also had significant work that needed to be done on the pool surface and the surrounds, including a leak. It has meant a significant fundraising campaign to raise the funds needed for the upgrade.
Thanks to the generous support of NZCT we are now well underway with our upgrade project and the 2023/24 season looks like it will be a good one. We’ll now be able to replace the filter, pipes, and pump to ensure the efficiency and reliability of the entire pool system. Once again, we’ll see families teaching their little ones water confidence, teenagers hanging out and playing water volleyball, athletes training, the return of our swimming gala, and our famous pool parties.
Methven Community Pool opened in 1929 and was subsequently enlarged and reconstructed in 1966. Our facility has two outdoor heated pools - a regular 33m pool and a learners’ pool. We operate from November to March, with public access available through the purchase of a season key, group bookings, and visits with local schools.
The pool is run by a group of volunteers who are passionate about providing a facility to improve the wellbeing, health, and safety of our community. At a time when national drowning rates are rising at an alarming rate, having a place to offer free swim lessons and swimming squads helps keep our community strong and connected. Every year on pre-season clean-up day, adults and kids work together to scrub sludge off the bottom of the pool, clean equipment, and even rescue a few frogs!
