USA RIDERS WIN NZCT WOMEN'S TOUR
US rider takes home NZCT Women's Tour of New Zealand title
The 2010 NZCT Women's Tour of New Zealand plays a key role in women's cycling. Held at the end of February, it is the only women's international race to be held in Oceania this year, and carries an International Cycling Union (UCI) rating of 2.2. The USA national team’s Shelley Evans claimed the NZCT Women’s Tour of New Zealand overall victory. This was her debut entry in an UCI ranked stage race.
A total of 102 riders from nine countries took part in the event, along with national teams from Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, USA and Norway. The racing was active from the start of stage one. The route was lined with spectators as the race made its way through the main streets of the Wairarapa, Manawatu and Wellington.
Evans won the final stage ahead of Australia’s Kristy Broun (Australian Institute of Sport) and NZCT team leader Joanne Kiesanowski. NZCT's Sally Ann Hughes presented Evans with her prize (see right). Evans honoured her teammates in her victory speech, but also took the opportunity to say she and her team sent their best wishes to those affected by the major earthquake in Chile, including NZCT Tour organiser Jorge Sandoval whose family lives in the quake area.
