Teachers and students at Taradale High School have received a $6,400 grant from NZCT for new sports uniforms.

Sports Coordinator Brad Cate says, “A recent stocktake identified that there were insufficient sports uniform to meet all sporting codes needs. Both boys’ and girls’ basketball jerseys were in short demand or no longer suitable for use. An additional request for unisex multi-sports shorts will help ensure the other codes have enough shorts to allow all students to be uniformed correctly.“

“We have made numerous funding applications to NZCT to support increased sport participation at Taradale over the years. These grants have allowed us to purchase new sports uniforms in a wider range of sizes. The benefits of getting new uniforms not only include providing our students with a sense of inclusion in a team environment allows families to participate without needing to worry about the cost of buying the right gear.”

“The increase in range of sizes allows students the chance to participate and wear a uniform. Previously many students that did not fit uniforms or stood out in uniforms that were different to their peers would quit playing. The benefit to the community is the ability to allow all students of all sizes the same opportunity to participate, increasing levels of fitness in children, and creating safe, supportive environments for all families.”

“Other grants have gone towards costs associated with trainings and games/tournaments - hockey, for example, costs considerable amounts of money to hire the turf. These grants allow us to keep costs at a manageable level for the families so their kids can participate. Without these grants many families would simply be unable to afford the rising costs associated with having sporting teams especially in sports such as hockey.”

“Tournament costs have been subsidised as well, often covering the cost of accommodation needs for twenty people in various areas of the country. Again, by covering these costs, all team members will be able to participate."

Taradale High School is a decile 7 school, founded in 1970. It currently has a strong sporting presence and likes to provide opportunities for all students to participate in a wide range of sporting codes. NZCT funding helps to support us in providing these options to our students.
