INTRODUCTION
OUR ROLE
NZCT aims to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for the people using the gaming facilities in our venues.
Gaming machines have become a well established leisure activity in our communities, and they also generate much needed funds for our sporting and non profit organisations.
Through our venue operators in pubs and clubs around the country, we ensure our gaming machines are used responsibly. After all, our funds are used for community good, and while the issue of problem gambling is not widespread, we accept a duty to identify anyone who may be at risk of developing addictive gambling behaviour.
THE ROLE OF OUR OPERATORS
When gaming machines are being used, our operators must always have someone on duty who has been trained in 'harm minimisation'. This means they are able to provide information and advice to anyone they believe may have difficulty with their gambling.
It might be a quiet word of advice about contacting a problem gambling organisation that could offer help and support to the person and their family. Or it might be necessary to help someone by completing a Self-Exclusion Order, which bans them voluntarily from the venue for two years. Venue operators also have the power to issue a non-voluntary Exclusion Order if they believe someone has a gambling problem. (See Exclusion Orders)
SEEK HELP
If you think you or someone close to you has a gambling problem, we encourage you to seek professional help. There are a number of problem gambling organisations that provide free assistance to those in need, such as the Gambling Helpline, which offers a 24-hour free-phone number for anyone who wants to discuss any gambling problem.
